SubSensei Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-06-05

SubSensei is a browser extension that overlays synced Japanese subtitles on Crunchyroll and provides a hover dictionary for Japanese learners. This policy describes exactly what data the extension handles and where it goes.

SubSensei has no backend of its own and runs no analytics. It does not collect, sell, or transmit your data to the developer. The only network requests it makes are to the third-party services listed below, solely to fetch the subtitles and dictionary definitions you ask for.

What the extension processes

DataWhere it goesWhy
The anime series title shown on the page AniList (graphql.anilist.co) Resolve the title to an AniList ID so the right subtitle can be found.
AniList ID + episode number + your Jimaku API key Jimaku (jimaku.cc) Download the matching Japanese subtitle file.
Japanese word/phrase you hover over Jisho (jisho.org) Return the dictionary definition shown in the popup.
Crunchyroll's own subtitle track URL Crunchyroll CDN Fetch the platform's timed subtitle used as the alignment reference.

These requests happen only while you are on a Crunchyroll watch page and only in response to your activity (watching an episode, hovering a word). Each of these third parties has its own privacy policy governing the request.

What is stored, and where

All extension data is stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage.local. Nothing is uploaded to a SubSensei server (there is none). Stored data includes:

What the extension does NOT do

Removing your data

Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data. You can also clear the subtitle cache and your API key from the extension popup and options page at any time.

Changes

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date above will change and the new version will ship with the extension and appear on this page.
